<p>So you want to climb <a href="../../../climbing/asia/nepal/everest">Mount Everest</a> and realised practising on a few other mountains first was a good idea? Great, Let's go.</p>
<p>This is aimed more at the "I'm the kind of climber who just wanted to climb Everest" type. Who might not have spent much else of their life in the mountains. So where to start?</p>
<p>Might be a surprise, but some go for Everest with practically zero experience. Others go with not much more (lobuche east / mera, then Everest - and all in one long trip). If you're reading this then hopefully you want to take a saner - more enjoyable - route, and get as much experience as possible on the way to your end goal of climbing Everest. Along the way climb a bunch of awesome mountains, learn a lot, and make life time memories, and friendships.</p>
<p>First, let's consider a few things:</p>
<ul>
<li>Altitude</li>
<li>Climbing</li>
<li>Gear</li>
<li>Expedition life</li>
</ul>
<h3>Altitude</h3>
<p>Going to altitude affects everyone differently. Just like with drinking where some people are light weights and some can drink a lot without getting too drunk. Some people can acclimate at 400 vertical metres a day, whereas for some their bodies adjust at 250 vertical metres a day. It's not correlated with fitness or age.&nbsp;<br>The first time you go up to 6000 metres, it's probably going to hit you hard. Each subsequent time things get a little easier. Your body, or your mind, seems to remember something from last time. It's still extremely tough going, but you're a tougher person now - roll with it.<br>In an ideal world you'd climb at a minimum first a 6k mountain to get a feel for real altitude, and an 'easy' 8k peak. The first 6k is what will really introduce you to high altitude mountaineering. The first 8k is what introduces you once again to high altitude mountaineering - and makes you realise you never really got to know it the first time.<br>At 8k you enter 'the death zone' - ooh la la.&nbsp;<br>Doing anything exhausting tires you out, slows your brain somehow. Going up big mountains will take both you and your brains breath away. Getting experience up high, 'operating' at altitude is what you want. Simple things like unclipping from one line, and clipping into the next (or was that meant to be first clipping onto the next line and second unclipping from the first?!) seem to really require intentional thought when up high. And you want to be able to do these things without spending so much mental energy that you need to have a break after.<br>In the death zone, your body starts to die a little (sounds melodramatic - but this is real, let's not sugar coat it). At eight thousand metres you want to be operating from muscle memory and not needing to spend mental/physical energy on anything you don't have to. You need to get 'in and out' ASAP.</p>

<h3>Climbing</h3>
<p>Everest is not a technical climb. There are no difficult climbing sections. And with fixed lines set up for the whole route, most danger has been minimised. That said it's still an extreme effort and not to be underestimated. You will have to work your ass off to get out above base camp. And then there are still three more camps plus a summit push - not to mention the descent - ahead of you.<br>But hey, it's just walking right?&nbsp;<br>Everest is for sure more accessible due to its non-technical nature. Although it's not a walk in the park either, proverbial or otherwise. The main thing you need experience with is pushing through endurance, and doing so with a load of climbing gear on while keeping track of your rope gear (jumar / safety clips). Base camp to camp 1 has some 'fun' terrain to traverse, you'll use ladders and other nonsense to get through here which is a physical and mental obstacle.<br>The Khumbu is really quite unique, and likely you'll just figure it out while at base camp. The other training can be gained through less intense experience on easy 6s or 7s.<br>Some people like to climb something lower but more difficult to gain confidence knowing if they can do tough stuff at 6k (eg yellow tower on Ama Dablam) then they can prob traverse 'easier' stuff in Everests death zone.</p>

<h3>Gear</h3>
<p>Everest is kind of out the way (from the Nepali side at least - where you'll typically climb from), requiring a quirky flight and a week plus of walking to get to base camp. That said, there's basically a cottage industry set up around climbing it and you will have everything possible to help you. How much of it you want to make use of, is up to you.<br>Most likely you'll have an 'everything under the sun' organised trip, where you maybe need to check off some gear from a shopping list, but otherwise have everything provided/rented to you, and carried up to base camp on various donkeys/yaks.&nbsp;<br>Ropes will be fixed up at the start of the season, so your personal gear is limited to clothing, boots, harness and jumar/clips for the rope, oxygen stuff.</p>
<h3>Expedition life</h3>
<p>If you've only done 2-3 day trips (excluding the walk in), doing a trip where you spend more considerable time on the mountain is nice prep for Everest. You'll figure out what extra stuff you want to have with you. Cards? pee bottle? journal? battery packs/cables? Different stuff sacks to coordinate what goes where.<br>Basically, when going to 8k you want to have everything figured out and be operating in familiar territory. So do a climb that will have multiple camps and ideally a rotation.</p>

<h2>Okay, so what mountains?</h2>
<p>If you're down for a 6k 7k and 8k first, here are some thoughts:</p>
<h3>4k - Alps or Cascade / Sierra Peaks</h3>
<p>If you have no experience mountaineering above 4k, you could ideally get some experience at that height. Alps, <a href="../../../climbing/africa/morocco/toubkal">Toubkal</a>, or one of main great options in continental US (<a href="../../../climbing/north-america/united-states/mount-rainier">Rainer</a>, <a href="../../../climbing/north-america/united-states/mount-baker">Baker</a>, <a href="../../../climbing/north-america/united-states/mount-hood">Hood</a>, <a href="../../../climbing/north-america/united-states/mount-shashta">Shasta</a>, etc).&nbsp;</p>
<p>For Europeans going to Morocco for Toubkal is a fun idea once you've gotten your feet wet in the alps.&nbsp;It's not really a challenge by any stretch, but has a similar expedition vibe as flying to the Himalayas and donkeying up a load of gear, while staying in an exotic culture.</p>
<p>Basically aim to go up a mountain which has snow/ice. Not a technical peak. Just something where you'll need to wear boots/crampons, walk roped up to someone, and get a feel for 1. the gear 2. the group aspect of mountaineering. If you're used to marathon/triathlon kind of sports, this will be a bit different.</p>

<h3>6k - Plenty of options; Nepal / India or Georgia / Russia or Alaska / South America</h3>
<p>You could also skip 4k peaks and go to the Himalayas where you can go for an entry level 6k. Something very accessible like Stok Kangri in India, or the usual suspects in Nepal (<a href="../../../climbing/asia/nepal/mera-peak">Mera</a> / <a href="../../../climbing/asia/nepal/island-peak">Island peak</a> / <a href="../../../climbing/asia/nepal/lobuche-east">Lobuche</a>).<br>This way you taste altitude, start to figure out gear and get a feel for the format of going up a big mountain with a team/guide - with all that entails.</p>

<p>Then go home. Rest, think about what you'd do differently, what gear might be handy etc. Digest your experience so that thinking about bigger mountains is a lot less abstract, and you can start to plan for them more meaningfully.<br>You'll now know if you acclimatise quite alright, or take a little longer. Get colder feet than most, or run hot. Like chocolate, or energy gels, or whatever else, on your summit night push.<br>These lower peaks are about figuring out how you operate as a mountaineer. They're also great trips to the mountains in their own right. Enjoy them.</p>
<p>If you're in Europe, getting to Nepal is easier. If on a budget, <a href="../../../climbing/asia/georgia/kazbek">Kazbek</a> in Georgia or <a href="../../../climbing/europe/russia/elbrus">Elbrus</a> in Russia are alternatives.<br>If you're in North America, aside from Alaska you could go down to <a href="../../../climbing/south-america/ecuador">Ecuador</a>, <a href="../../../climbing/south-america/bolivia">Bolivia</a>, or <a href="../../../climbing/south-america/peru">Peru</a>. Each have very affordably priced options for guided climbs on easy to moderate difficulty 6k peaks.</p>
<p>If in North America, <a href="../../../climbing/north-america/united-states/mount-foraker">Foraker</a> isn't a bad substitute.</p>
<p>From here, you can go on up to 7k peaks, or ideally stop to do more difficult climbs at 6k. Climb more technical (but still totally do-able) peaks, entrench your skills.<br>Some ideas: <a href="../../../climbing/south-america/bolivia/illimani">Illimani</a> in Bolivia, <a href="../../../climbing/south-america/peru/alpamayo">Alpamayo</a> in Peru, <a href="../../../climbing/asia/nepal/cholatse">Cholatse</a> or <a href="../../../climbing/asia/nepal/ama-dablam">Ama dablam</a> in Nepal. <a href="../../../climbing/north-america/united-states/denali">Denali</a> in Alaska/US.</p>

<h3><br>7k - Aconcagua / Lenin peak</h3>
<p>Now that you've got a mix of experience at 4k/6k, consider a legit expedition on a 7k peak.&nbsp;<br>The goal here is to get higher altitude experience, build on your mountaineering skills, get more comfortable operating at height, and pushing yourself. Climbing to 6k is really hard, 7k is even harder.</p>
<p>An obvious option for many is <a href="../../../climbing/south-america/argentina/aconcagua">Aconcagua</a>.<br>It's a real expedition which will take about three weeks. You'll cycle through many camps, and push yourself to a high altitude while likely encountering real cold/wind.<br>That said, it's not technically difficult ('just' walking). Snow/ice is minimal. Infrastructure/support is superb. This makes it one of the most accessible options to push into 7k (even if it's short a few metres).<br>Permits are required, but the amount of operators keeps competition between them high, and prices competitive.&nbsp;</p>
<p>For those (maybe in Europe) who don't want to fly so far, Central Asia has <a href="../../../climbing/asia/tajikistan/lenin-peak">Lenin peak</a> which is similar. 7k, loads of in-expensive operators, nice infra, and not technical (it is however a classic snowy white mountain - but without too serious crevasse danger). Plus, just flying to Kyrgyzstan is pretty exotic.</p>

<h3>8k - Cho Oyu / Manaslu</h3>
<p>Get an 8k under your belt before tackling Everest. Here you get to the real big mountains, and realise the 4k 6k 7k that got you here were just stepping stones.<br><a href="../../../climbing/asia/nepal/cho-oyu">Cho Oyu</a> is an obvious candidate, since it's non technical and will introduce you to the Everest region. For some, being so close to Everest makes it less appealing (visiting the same region twice, and khumbu cough).<br><a href="../../../climbing/asia/nepal/manaslu">Manaslu</a> is pretty trendy these days, and also non-technical with many operators. So a fine alternative thus allowing you to climb in two regions of Nepal.<br>You'll need different warmer gear, and it's a longer expedition but otherwise your 6k skills will just be built on.</p>

<h4>Shortcuts:</h4>
<p>If that all seems like way too much work, then go for Aconcagua and either Cho Oyu or Manaslu.<br>If it doesn't seem like enough - great, there are many more amazing peaks to climb. However focussing on non-mountaineering training is equally valuable.<br>However I recommend less shortcuts. Mountaineering is awesome, enjoy it :)</p>
<h2>Conclusion:</h2>
<p>Try and summit two big mountains a year for three years before Everest. Do an 'easy' 6, then a technical. Aim to do an 'easy' 8. In between, climb 6k or 7k peaks, and get used to expedition life.</p>
<h3>Some notes on difficulties:</h3>
<h3>Aconcagua</h3>
<p>Has a low success rate (around 1 in 3). But this is a little deceptive. It attracts a lot of less experienced folk who perhaps aren't ready for such a feat of endurance as battling up to 7k. If you have the fitness/stamina/gear, it's not a difficult mountain.</p>
<h3>Lenin peak</h3>
<ul>
<li>Doesn't have the same low summit rate reputation as Aconcagua, however partly as it's climbed by 'more serious' mountaineers.</li>
<li>Generally not a dangerous mountain. Has had some deaths, but from avalanches.</li>
</ul>
<h3>Cho Oyu</h3>
<ul>
<li>One of the highest success rates of any 8k peak</li>
<li>Thankfully the lowest death rate of any 8k mountain (deaths are super rare)</li>
</ul>
<h3>Everest</h3>
<ul>
<li>2/3rds of people summit - Disappointing for the 1/3rd, but ultimately this is a high summit rate.</li>
<li>Maybe 1 in 40 climbers die. However this stat is skewed by 'serious climbers' doing alternative routes and climbing without oxygen.<br><br></li>

<h2>Conquering the Snow Leopard Peaks: Central Asia&rsquo;s Ultimate Mountaineering Challenge</h2>
<p>The <em>Snow Leopard</em> peaks are the ultimate prize for high-altitude climbers venturing into the vast ranges of Central Asia. This prestigious challenge consists of summiting five towering peaks in the former Soviet Union, each surpassing 7,000 meters (22,965 feet). Those who succeed earn the coveted <em>Snow Leopard</em> title, a mark of exceptional endurance, skill, and resilience in high-altitude mountaineering. With only a few hundred climbers worldwide holding this distinction, the Snow Leopard award is a deservedly respected achievements in the climbing community.</p>
<p>In this article, we&rsquo;ll explore each of the five Snow Leopard peaks, the challenges they pose, and tips on planning your own expeditions to them. We&rsquo;ll also discuss why <em>guided trips</em> may be the ideal choice for tackling these remote, high-altitude mountains.</p>

<p>The Snow Leopard peaks are located in the Pamir and Tien Shan mountain ranges, spanning <a href="../../../climbing/asia/kyrgyzstan">Kyrgyzstan</a>, <a href="../../../climbing/asia/kazakhstan">Kazakhstan</a>, and <a href="../../../climbing/asia/tajikistan">Tajikistan</a>. These five peaks are:</p>

<p>Each peak has unique technical challenges, weather conditions, and <em>climbing routes</em>, making the Snow Leopard challenge a true test of a mountaineer&rsquo;s skill and determination.</p>

<h3>A history of the snow leopard peaks</h3>
<p>During the Soviet era, mountaineers from the USSR faced significant travel restrictions, limiting their access to the renowned high-altitude peaks of the Himalayas and the Karakoram in Nepal, Pakistan, and India. This lack of access led the Soviet Union to develop its own high-altitude mountaineering challenges within its borders, and the <strong>Snow Leopard Award</strong> emerged from this context. The Snow Leopard peaks, all located within the USSR&rsquo;s mountainous regions, became the ultimate goal for Soviet climbers seeking to test their skills at extreme altitudes.</p>
<p>The <strong>Snow Leopard Award</strong> was created in 1967 as a prestigious recognition for climbers who ascended all five of these 7,000-meter peaks within Soviet-controlled territories. The five peaks selected for the award were among the most formidable, highest, and technically challenging within the USSR&rsquo;s borders, spanning Central Asia&rsquo;s Tien Shan and Pamir ranges. These mountains offered the closest conditions to an "expedition" experience that climbers would encounter in the Himalayas or Karakoram, with demanding routes, high altitudes, and treacherous weather.</p>
<p>The Soviet government actively promoted mountaineering and encouraged climbers to tackle these summits. Over the years, thousands of climbers sought to achieve the Snow Leopard title, and it became one of the most respected awards in Soviet and international mountaineering. Since the dissolution of the USSR, the Snow Leopard Award has been preserved by mountaineering federations in Russia and other former Soviet states, continuing to challenge climbers from around the world who seek to conquer some of the world&rsquo;s most challenging peaks outside the Himalayas.</p>
<h2>1. Communism Peak (Ismoil Somoni Peak) &ndash; 7,495 m</h2>

<p><a href="../../../climbing/asia/tajikistan/communism-peak">Communism peak / Pik Kommunizma,</a> renamed Ismoil Somoni Peak, is the highest peak in the Pamir range and the tallest of the Snow Leopard peaks. Its massive height and challenging weather conditions make it one of the toughest ascents in Central Asia.</p>
<ul>
<li><strong>Difficulty</strong>: Rated AD (3/6). Extremely challenging. The ascent involves complex glacier travel, steep snow and ice sections, and high-altitude technical climbing.</li>
<li><strong>Best Season</strong>: July to August, when temperatures are relatively mild and weather conditions more predictable.</li>
<li><strong>Guided Expeditions</strong>: Due to the technical difficulties and remoteness, <a href="../../../climbing/asia/tajikistan/communism-peak#guides"><em>guided trips</em></a> are highly recommended. <em>Experienced mountaineering guides</em> offer crucial knowledge on route selection, altitude acclimatization, and dealing with adverse weather.</li>
</ul>
<h2>2. Korzhenevskaya &ndash; 7,105 m</h2>

<ul>
<li><strong>Difficulty</strong>: Rated AD (3/6). Moderate to challenging. Climbers must be prepared for steep snow slopes, glacier crossings, and possible avalanche risk.</li>
<li><strong>Best Season</strong>: July to early September.</li>
<li><strong>Guided Trips</strong>: While less demanding than other peaks, Korzhenevskaya&rsquo;s elevation still requires careful acclimatization. Joining a <a href="../../../climbing/asia/tajikistan/korzhenevskaya#guides">guided expedition</a> can provide structure for safe acclimatization and support with logistics.</li>
</ul>
<h2>3. Lenin peak &ndash; 7,134 m</h2>

Many climbers attempt Lenin peak as their first 7,000-meter peak.</p>

<li><strong>Difficulty</strong>: Rated PD (2/6). Moderate. While Lenin peak is less technical, climbers should not underestimate the risks posed by high altitude, crevasses, and unpredictable weather.</li>
<li><strong>Best Season</strong>: July to August.</li>
<li><strong>Guided Expeditions</strong>: As one of the more approachable Snow Leopard peaks, <a href="../../../climbing/asia/tajikistan/lenin-peak#guides">Lenin peak offers a range of guided trip options</a>. These&nbsp;<em>guided expeditions</em> are ideal for climbers who want to focus on acclimatization and enjoy the ascent without worrying about logistics.</li>
</ul>
<h2>4. Khan Tengri &ndash; 7,010 m</h2>

Located in the Tien Shan range, this peak is as beautiful as it is challenging, with exposed ridges and sections of technical climbing.</p>
<ul>
<li><strong>Difficulty</strong>: Rated D (4/6). High. Khan Tengri&rsquo;s approach requires glacier travel, rock climbing, and high-altitude skills.</li>
<li><strong>Best Season</strong>: July and August.</li>
<li><strong>Guided Trips</strong>: Given its technical nature, most climbers opt for a <a href="../../../climbing/asia/kazakhstan-kyrgyzstan/khan-tengri#guides">guided expedition to Khan Tengri</a>. <em>Guides</em> provide crucial support with fixed ropes, navigation, and handling harsh weather conditions.</li>
</ul>
<h2>5. Pobeda Peak &ndash; 7,439 m</h2>

<p><a href="../../../climbing/asia/kyrgyzstan/pobeda-peak">Pobeda Peak</a> is regarded as one of the most dangerous mountains in the world, known for its unpredictable weather and extreme cold. The mountain&rsquo;s north face is an enormous wall of ice, challenging even the most experienced climbers.</p>
<ul>
<li><strong>Difficulty</strong>: Rated TD (5/6).Extremely high. Pobeda demands technical ice and snow climbing, extreme endurance, and complete self-sufficiency.</li>

Climb the Snow leopard peaks

<p><br><a href="../../../climbing/asia/nepal">Nepal</a> has three classic 'first 6000 meter peak' mountains: <a href="../../../climbing/asia/nepal/island-peak">Island Peak</a> (6,189m), <a href="../../../climbing/asia/nepal/lobuche-east">Lobuche East</a> (6,119m), and <a href="../../../climbing/asia/nepal/mera-peak">Mera peak</a> (6,476m).</p>
<p>All are ideal for anyone with some entry level mountaineering experience, but are of course a big step up given the altitude.&nbsp;</p>
<p>They are all in the Everest region, although <a href="../../../climbing/asia/nepal/mera-peak">Mera peak</a> is quite a detour. &nbsp;Whereas <a href="../../../climbing/asia/nepal/lobuche-east">Lobuche East</a> and <a href="../../../climbing/asia/nepal/island-peak">Island peak</a> are simpler additions on to an Everest trek (Everest base camp, or Everest three passes). Many will add them on to a trek, since that way not only do you get to hike through one of the worlds most beautiful and best equipped trekking regions - you also acclimatise nicely for the said climb.</p>
<p>First of all, let's look at each mountain before comparing them.</p>
<p>&nbsp;</p>
<h2>Island Peak</h2>

<p>This is probably the most popular, as many see it as being easier than <a href="../../../climbing/asia/nepal/lobuche-east">Lobuche</a> (the other option that's easy to add on to an Everest region trek. It's less steep than <a href="../../../climbing/asia/nepal/lobuche-east">Lobuche East</a>, although does have quite a few obstacles.</p>
<p>Most of the climb is a straight forward hike up to crampon point at around 5500 meters. From there you must traverse one or two crevasses. Ladders are set up to help here. You're attached to ropes at all times, but this is still a bit unnerving.&nbsp;</p>
<p>After crossing the crevasse and taking a meandering but gentle path in between them up the glacier, you'll get to a final incline. It's about 45-50 degrees, and with fixed ropes. Likely there'll be some traffic here given the mountains popularity. Given how high you've climbed, the traffic presents a welcome slow down before reaching the summit.</p>

<h2>Lobuche East</h2>

<p><a href="../../../climbing/asia/nepal/lobuche-east">Lobuche east</a> is much higher up towards Everest base camp and is often used by Everest climbers to acclimate. You will start from a high camp (5,450m) making the climb only (650 meters), and optionally stay in the lower base camp on the way if not already acclimated.</p>
<p>It's about 2-3 hours from Lobuche village to high camp. 30-40 minutes just to the base camp.</p>
<p>It has a reputation of being 'more technical' than <a href="../../../climbing/asia/nepal/island-peak">Island peak</a>, but I don't think this is true. It is a bit of a steep scramble in one or two places between high camp and crampon point - but nothing at all difficult. There are some ropes to hold on to as you find your way up.</p>
<p>The route up from high camp to crampon point is largely solid rock. So it is a little steep in places, but ultimately easier to move up compared to loose scree (as on <a href="../../../climbing/asia/nepal/island-peak">Island peak</a>).</p>
<p>From crampon point it's straight up. The slope is around 50 degrees, and has fixed lines all the way up. It's steep enough to be somewhat tiring, but not so steep it's scary.<br>You'll gain height faster too, which is a plus.</p>
<p>Slowly, as the sun comes up you'll approach the summit. A lovely narrow ridge which affords incredible views of surrounding peaks and valleys.</p>

<h2>Mera Peak</h2>

<p><a href="../../../climbing/asia/nepal/mera-peak">Mera Peak</a> is the tallest of all three (6,476m), but perhaps the easiest.&nbsp;</p>
<p>It has a base camp and high camp, and from there it's just a 700 meter push to the summit.</p>
<p>Despite its height, it's regarded as an easier 6000 meter peak for beginners since the route up to the summit is very gentle.</p>
<p>From Lukla, where you'll likely fly into (but hiking in is a beautiful option - and affords better acclimatisation), it's 5-6 days east to base camp. This is in the opposite direction to Everest region. This means you avoid the hordes of crowds, but if you plan to trek EBC will prolong your trip a lot.</p>

<h2>Comparison</h2>
<h3>Difficulty</h3>
<p><a href="../../../climbing/asia/nepal/mera-peak">Mera peak</a> is technically the easiest, followed by <a href="../../../climbing/asia/nepal/lobuche-east">Lobuche east</a> and <a href="../../../climbing/asia/nepal/island-peak">Island peak</a> in joint second place. <a href="../../../climbing/asia/nepal/lobuche-east">Lobuche</a> is steeper but more straight forward. <a href="../../../climbing/asia/nepal/island-peak">Island peak</a> is not steep, but has more obstacles to get past. Given <a href="../../../climbing/asia/nepal/mera-peak">Mera's</a> extra height, more endurance is needed. Those few hundred metres will feel like a lot more above 6000 meters.</p>
<p>Note: Some readers have commented out that Island peak has gotten a little harder the last year or two, with slightly less snow. So perhaps now it's the most difficult of the three.</p>
<h3>Summit push gain</h3>
<p>How high will you ascend on summit night</p>
<p>Island peak: 1,100 meters (or if you use high camp - 900 meters, but few use this option)<br>Lobuche east: 600 meters<br>Mera peak: 700 meters</p>
<h3>Practicality</h3>
<p><a href="../../../climbing/asia/nepal/lobuche-east">Lobuche east</a> and <a href="../../../climbing/asia/nepal/island-peak">Island peak</a> are easy to slot on to any Everest region trek (but arrange your tour or permits before leaving Kathmandu). <a href="../../../climbing/asia/nepal/mera-peak">Mera Peak</a> is a lot quicker to access from these other two, although that's only a plus if you are just climbing one of the peaks and not planing on trekking EBC/etc too.</p>
<h3>Views</h3>
<p>All give spectacular views. Although I'd say <a href="../../../climbing/asia/nepal/lobuche-east">Lobuche east</a> has the best. Not only can you see the biggest peaks in the world (and one of the most beautiful - <a href="../../../climbing/asia/nepal/ama-dablam">Ama Dablam</a>), you also have a great view down the main valleys of the Everest region. <a href="../../../climbing/asia/nepal/island-peak">Island peak</a> has a great view of <a href="../../../climbing/asia/nepal/ama-dablam">Ama Dablam</a>, however it is also very close to Lhotse (8,516m), which when towering over you makes your 6,189m summit seem kind of small :(<br><a href="../../../climbing/asia/nepal/mera-peak">Mera</a> has exceptional views to a sea of huge peaks. It also has great views from its high camp.</p>
<h2>What else to consider</h2>
<h3>Guide options</h3>
<p>For guided trips you would typically book a 2-3 week trip with an agency in Kathmandu. However if you are doing <a href="../../../climbing/asia/nepal/lobuche-east">Lobuche East</a> or <a href="../../../climbing/asia/nepal/island-peak">Island peak</a> and just adding it on to a trek in that region, you only need the guide for the climb (for two days). It's possible to arrange in advance to meet your guide on whatever date at the base camp. This is something quite unique in <a href="../../../climbing/asia/nepal">Nepal</a>, where guides will go direct to base camps, or be based there for two months in the climbing season. Doing this can save you quite a bit of money. I did this when climbing Island peak - arranging a guide for two days for about $300 (for two people inc permits) - quite some years back, while trekking the Everest three passes circuit.</p>
<h3>Fitness / Stamina</h3>
<p>Although all these peaks are 'easy first 6000 meter' objectives. Don't underestimate the fitness and stamina needed to reach the summit. At these altitudes a 1000 meter gain requires a huge effort (not dissimilar to completing a marathon).</p>
<h3>Gear rental</h3>
<p>If you join an organised expedition, you'll likely get all your gear included.<br>Kathmandu has an infinite number of gear shops where you can buy or rent absolutely everything.<br>Similarly for each of these peaks you can rent everything more or less at the tea house village closest to the base camp. This is obviously a good option to save money (gear is rented by the day - so you can rent just for two days instead of two to three weeks) and carrying it.</p>
<h3>Walk in or fly</h3>
<p>For all these peaks you'll pass through Lukla. Most fly straight in.<br>It's an amazing flight, but comes with its own problems. The airport is used also by the thousands (and thousands and thousands) of Everest base camp trekkers. This can become a big problem when bad weather grounds all flights (which happens practically every year - often multiple times, for days at a time). Many trips have been ruined due to this. Many factor in an extra contingency day, but that's often not enough when bad weather hangs around.<br>Alternatively you can take a bus to Salleri, and then walk in to Lukla over three extra days (four including the bus). This is a beautiful extra section to trek, taking you through lush forests past huge rivers and waterfalls. It's a much quieter trail compared to further up, and something most will overlook. These extra days will also help with acclimatisation, taking you up to altitude more gradually - and letting your lungs work too which really helps.<br>Personally I'd recommend this option if you have the time.</p>
<h3>Cost</h3>
<p>All three peaks will cost about the same. Although if you plan to do an Everest trek (Everest base camp, Everest three passes, Gokyo) then it's cheaper to just add on <a href="../../../climbing/asia/nepal/lobuche-east">Lobuche east</a> or <a href="../../../climbing/asia/nepal/island-peak">Island peak</a> (since it works out as just two extra days each) whereas <a href="../../../climbing/asia/nepal/mera-peak">Mera peak</a> would mean adding a week on to your trip.</p>
<h3>Health</h3>
<p>Many get sick in Everest region. If doing a trek expecting to acclimatise and then tackle <a href="../../../climbing/asia/nepal/island-peak">Island peak</a> or <a href="../../../climbing/asia/nepal/lobuche-east">Lobuche</a> in the best health this can often backfire. If you get diarrhoea it'll drain you completely, and you may find replenishing you energy once better harder than usual given that there's not much (or any) fruit available at tea houses. Take extra care with sanitisers etc, and take a few different medications to cover the basic travel sicknesses.</p>
<h3>Time of year / Weather</h3>
<p>All three peaks are the same in this regard, to be climbed either in the Spring or Autumn season. See the <a href="../../../climbing/asia/nepal">Nepal page</a> for more details. Both seasons have pros and cons so you can't really go wrong. If you go in Autumn, the skies are generally blue and crisp - the summer monsoons have settled all the dust. Spring can be colder. But when the monsoon will finish is hard to predict, some years it hangs around a couple of weeks longer than expected, making planning for this nice period tougher.&nbsp;<br><a href="../../../climbing/asia/nepal/mera-peak">Mera</a> is more exposed, so can feel colder. Mitts over your gloves are necessary (I'd where three pairs - check the <a href="../../../articles/what-and-how-to-pack-for-a-6000-meter-mountain-climb-complete-guide-and-ultimate-gear-checklist-and-how-to-best-use-the-gear-effectively">gear packing article</a> for more tips).</p>
<h3>Permits</h3>
<p>All these peaks require permits. Both <a href="../../../climbing/asia/nepal/lobuche-east">Lobuche East</a> and <a href="../../../climbing/asia/nepal/island-peak">Island peak</a> are in Sagarmartha national park and thus require two tickets.<br>Permits are available in Kathmandu, but if you go on an organised tour this is taken care of for you. The park entrance fees are paid as you get/enter the park in cash.&nbsp;</p>
<h3>Future peaks</h3>
<p>If you go for <a href="../../../climbing/asia/nepal/lobuche-east">Lobuche east</a> or <a href="../../../climbing/asia/nepal/ama-dablam">Ama Dablam</a> you'll pass by some of the worlds most spectacular mountains. This is a blessing and a curse... Probably a few stick in your mind to slowly draw you back...</p>

What and how to pack for a 6000 meter mountain climb: complete guide and ultimate gear checklist and how to best use the gear effectively

I searched online for a good company, and Mountain Delight ticked all my boxes! Mr. Ram was quick and informative with his replies and suggested itineraries. He even allowed me to make some changes in order to lower the cost, which was greatly appreciated. I was picked up from the airport in Kathmandu by my guide, Mr. Gelbu Sherpa (pronounced Ghelly), and from then on he took care of everything the entire trip. Out of the 4 long distance treks I've taken, this was the first time I needed a climbing guide, and because we'd also be camping and summiting Tent Peak (Tharpu Chuli), we were accompanied by 2 porters too, Mr. Somdy Sherpa and Mr. Karme Sherpa. I was very delighted with the level of service from these 3 men. While the two porters understood most English they were a bit shy to speak. Gelbu Sherpa on the otherhand, could converse fluently. During the trip, he taught me Nepali words, phrases, and songs, and he expertly gave more insight to traditional Nepalese customs and the landscape we were traversing. He organized all of my meals, snacks, and coffee/tea breaks throughout the day, but what really impressed me was his negotiating a private room for me throughout the 2 week trek/climb! This was outstanding, as it is rather difficult for a solo trekker to find. He also supplied the necessities to withstand the cold and altitude: oxygen and heart rate monitoring daily, down jacket, negative 30 sleeping bag with a fleece liner, and so much more.  While he was my guide throughout, we also formed a friendship that I hope to be longlasting, as I will definitely book with Mr. Gelbu Sherpa again through Mountain Delights. I had an amazing time, but will hopefully be trekking for closer to 25 days next year with the EBC trek, 3 pass, and Island Peak summit. I'd definitely recommend a trek with Mr. Gelbu Sherpa!

Only thing I can mention to be aware of is that the flights to Lukla are not to and from Kathmandu, but Ramechhap airport a 5 hour drive from Kathmandu.

Trekked to EBC with Depen from June 24 to July 6, 2022. Depen was an amazing guide -- knowledgable about the region, and incredibly fun to talk to. The beginning of the trip was marred by poor weather conditions typical in the monsoon season, as we had to opt for a rather exciting two-day Jeep ride after waiting fruitlessly for four days in Kathmandu for a potential flight to Lukla. Once we gained elevation though, we were blessed by the continuous good weather which allowed us to capture the beauty of Ama Dablam, Pumori, Lhotse, and Everest, among other peaks. Unfortunately I had to forego climbing Island Peak due to time constraint. Chhatra (the owner) was very nice in giving me a refund (I originally booked the Island Peak climb). Overall my impression was that Nepal Eco Adventure is an organization that is very professionally run, and if the other guides are of similar quality as Depen (which I don't doubt), I'm sure one will have an amazing experience with them.

The best trekking team in nepal. This is our second time visiting nepal with Nepal Himayas Trekking. The crew helped out in a several difficulties during the completion of three passes trek in the Everest region. We also get fantastic views of the Khumbu ice fall as a result of the trek. In a nutshell, trekking via the Gokyo Lakes to the Everest Base Camp would be a once-in-a-lifetime experience with the mesmerizing sights of Mt. Cho Oyu, Everest, Lhotse, Makalu, Nuptse, Amadablam, Pumori, and Tengboche Monastery, the biggest monastery in the Khumbu region of Nepal. Highly recommended company for Trekking and Tours.

Kilimanjaro is daunting experience if you’re not experienced in summiting in such high altitude. While I had faith I was up to the challenge, Wander Woman tours and with Ekeney leading, bridged any insecurities.

Jagged Globe organized a private trek for me and four friends of the Tour du Mont Blanc. Everything was planned and managed exceptionally well. Our three guides, Victoria, Alex, Caroline and our on-ground logistics coordinator Rachel were outstanding. They came up with "Plan B-C, D" etc as needed to accommodate our individual needs along the journey--all with a smile and good sense of humor. We were pleased that they offered local cultural information and made suggestions regarding the best place for gelato, where to get last minute supplies, and advice for packing our rucksacks. Natalie and the JG office staff coordinated our ever-changing (Covid!) booking and travel arrangements flawlessly. Jagged Globe is just the best--no other company can compare!
